Grammarly has unveiled a new document-based interface, leveraging technology from its acquisition of productivity startup Coda. This development introduces a suite of AI-driven tools designed to enhance writing for students and professionals, including an AI grader, proofreader, and citation finder. The interface features a block-first design, allowing users to insert various elements such as tables and lists, and includes a sidebar with an AI assistant capable of summarizing text and offering writing suggestions. Key AI tools include ‘Reader Reactions’ for feedback based on reader personas, ‘Grader’ for instructor-guided feedback, and ‘Citation Finder’ for generating citations from public materials. Additionally, Grammarly has integrated agents to detect plagiarism and AI-generated content, although the accuracy of these tools can vary, according to Luke Behnke, VP of enterprise product at Grammarly.
Grammarly’s strategic focus on AI is underscored by its recent acquisition of email client Superhuman and a $1 billion funding round from General Catalyst aimed at acquisitions and enhancing sales and marketing. The company emphasizes a ‘moral imperative’ to educate students on AI usage, balancing the development of AI writing tools with detection capabilities. This dual approach aims to prepare students for the workforce while maintaining academic integrity. Grammarly’s ongoing AI integration reflects broader industry trends, positioning it to expand its market presence and product offerings. Executives should note the potential for increased user engagement and market differentiation as Grammarly continues to innovate in AI-driven writing solutions.
