Google Invests in Japan’s Sakana AI, Forming Strategic AI and Cloud Partnership

The company announced that Google has made a strategic investment in Sakana AI and entered into a partnership that will deepen technical collaboration and product integration. While the investment amount was not disclosed, it follows Sakana AI’s November 2025 funding round of roughly ¥20 billion, which lifted its valuation to about ¥400 billion, establishing it as one of Japan’s highest-valued unlisted startups. Under the partnership, Sakana AI will actively use Google’s Gemini and related generative AI technologies in its product development, provide customer feedback to improve Google’s models, collaborate on joint AI research, and distribute its products via Google Cloud, targeting security-sensitive clients such as financial institutions and government agencies. The company will continue developing its own large language model alongside solutions leveraging both Google and other providers’ models.

For investors, the deal signals validation of Sakana AI’s technical capabilities and commercial traction by a leading global AI and cloud provider, which may enhance its credibility with large enterprise and public-sector customers in Japan and potentially accelerate revenue growth.
