Canvas, Google’s AI-driven workspace inside Search, is being pushed into the mainstream U.S. market as the company opens AI Mode access to all English-language users, materially expanding Canvas’s potential user base without requiring adoption of separate Gemini subscriptions. This shift positions Canvas as a central interface for project planning, research synthesis, and on-the-fly app or tool creation, effectively turning general search traffic into a funnel for higher-value AI workflows.

Within AI Mode, users can now launch Canvas from the tool menu and describe what they want to build, then iteratively assemble documents, prototypes, or lightweight applications while pulling structured data from the web and Google’s Knowledge Graph. The product also links to the Gemini ecosystem, where paying Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra customers can tap the latest Gemini 3 model and a million-token context window, enabling far larger documents and more complex projects; this integration, plus direct competition with similar canvas-style tools from OpenAI and Anthropic, underlines Google’s intent to make Canvas a core monetizable surface for advanced AI usage.
