GMI Cloud Leads $12 Billion Sovereign AI Factory Initiative in Japan

New updates have been reported about GMI Cloud.

GMI Cloud plans to build a $12 billion AI Factory in Kagoshima, Japan, positioning the company as a key enabler of sovereign AI infrastructure for national-scale industrial and physical AI use cases. The project, backed by a development led by Kai Shin Digital Infrastructure in coordination with the Kagoshima Prefectural Government and Satsumasendai City, is designed to scale to 1 gigawatt of power capacity and is scheduled to begin development in late 2026.

By anchoring Japan’s first domestically built AI Factory focused on physical AI—supporting robotics, autonomous vehicles, manufacturing, and critical infrastructure—GMI Cloud is targeting a core pillar of national security and economic competitiveness. Management positions this move as a response to growing government demand for AI compute that is not dependent on foreign-controlled platforms, with CEO Alex Yeh emphasizing Japan’s need for AI systems it can own, control, and trust.

The Kagoshima facility will be built around next-generation AI hardware optimized for both training and inference, with the company aiming to set a benchmark for efficiency and scale in sovereign AI deployments. This aligns with GMI Cloud’s broader strategy as a GPU-as-a-Service “neocloud” provider delivering full-stack, inference-first AI infrastructure for governments, enterprises, and research institutions across multiple regulatory regimes.

Sustainability is a core design constraint, with GMI Cloud intending the plant to serve as a global reference architecture for environmentally responsible AI infrastructure at utility scale. The project is supported by key technology and manufacturing partners such as Wistron, which will contribute large-scale production and systems integration capabilities, and VAST Data, whose AI operating system will provide unified data management, governance, and persistent memory to underpin sovereign physical AI workloads.

For GMI Cloud, this initiative materially elevates its profile as a preferred partner for countries seeking AI sovereignty, potentially unlocking follow-on infrastructure deals in other regions pursuing similar national AI strategies. As governments accelerate efforts to localize AI compute and reduce exposure to cross-border data and supply chain risks, the Kagoshima AI Factory could serve as both a commercial proof point and a template for GMI Cloud’s future large-scale deployments.
