Focal, a San Francisco–based robotics company, has launched an autonomous personal comfort platform, starting with an AI-controlled electric heating system tailored to restaurants and hospitality operators. The 120V plug-and-play system uses integrated sensors and robotics to detect occupied seats, direct heat only where guests are present, and shut off when seats are empty, cutting energy use by up to 80% and installation costs by up to 75% compared with conventional patio heaters.
The platform, which is the first robotic heating system certified to UL standards, has already accumulated more than 30,000 operating hours across Michelin-star groups, regional chains, and independent venues in the Bay Area. Restaurant partners report that Focal’s targeted heating turns outdoor patios into fully productive, revenue-generating extensions of dining rooms, with management gaining centralized dashboards for system control and real-time visibility across outdoor spaces.
Co-founders Raj Tilwa and Rohan Pandya built Focal around the idea that traditional space-wide heating and cooling wastes energy while still leaving many occupants uncomfortable, even though buildings account for 51% of energy consumption and roughly 40% of occupants report thermal discomfort. By embedding robotics and AI directly into climate infrastructure and giving each guest digital controls over individual comfort settings, Focal aims to redefine comfort as both personalized and materially more efficient for operators.
Strong demand from early restaurant deployments is driving Focal’s growth in Northern California, where the company is deepening relationships with chains and groups while expanding its installed base. Backed by $4 million in pre-seed funding from climate- and hardware-focused investors as well as strategic angels in energy and hospitality, Focal plans to scale its platform nationally and adapt its technology beyond restaurants to homes, offices, warehouses, transit shelters, and hospitals, positioning the company for broader penetration into the building comfort and energy-management market.
