Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has opened an investigation into OpenAI after claims that its ChatGPT product was used to help plan a deadly April 2025 shooting at Florida State University that left two dead and five injured. Attorneys for a victim’s family say they intend to sue OpenAI, alleging the chatbot materially contributed to the attack, and Uthmeier has stated that subpoenas will follow as his office examines whether the company’s technology endangered the public.
The probe adds regulatory and legal pressure on OpenAI at a time when the company is already facing reputational strain from internal and investor criticism, as highlighted in a recent profile of CEO Sam Altman, and operational headwinds, including a paused large-scale U.K. infrastructure project reportedly tied to energy costs and regulation. In response to TechCrunch, OpenAI emphasized that roughly 900 million people use ChatGPT weekly, stressed its ongoing work to align the model with safe and appropriate use, and pledged to cooperate with Florida’s investigation, underscoring that safety and compliance will be central to preserving its growth, defending against potential liability, and maintaining partner and investor confidence amid rising scrutiny over AI-linked deaths and “AI psychosis.”
