Fermi America is accelerating development of its 11 gigawatt Project Matador private energy campus near Amarillo, Texas, by deepening its strategic partnership with Hyundai Engineering & Construction to restart large-scale nuclear construction in the United States. The company highlighted ongoing Front-End Engineering Design activities for four Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear units, positioning the project as a core source of future baseload power for energy-intensive AI, data center, and industrial demand.

As part of this effort, Fermi America joined Hyundai E&C’s Large-Scale Nuclear Technology Seminar in Dallas on February 10 to align U.S. contractors, strengthen the nuclear supply chain, and build workforce readiness around next-generation nuclear delivery. The seminar focused on nuclear construction standards, modular construction, heavy lifting, specialized nuclear works, plant building systems, and training skilled nuclear personnel, drawing strong participation from Texas-based firms and national industry stakeholders.

Fermi America views Project Matador as a pivotal opportunity to rebuild domestic nuclear execution capability after decades of stalled utility-scale nuclear development in the U.S. CEO and Co-Founder Toby Neugebauer underscored that very few projects in the country have a combined operating license accepted for review, active Nuclear Regulatory Commission engagement, and a highly characterized site that can credibly move to near-term groundbreaking.

The company emphasized Hyundai E&C’s track record of delivering 24 nuclear reactors globally, including ten built simultaneously on time and on budget, as a key risk mitigant for cost and schedule performance at Project Matador. With concurrent Department of Energy and Department of Commerce engagement, Fermi America believes this partnership can catalyze what it calls an American nuclear renaissance and support a potential engineering, procurement, and construction pathway.

Current FEED work between Fermi America and Hyundai E&C includes site layout optimization, evaluation of cooling system options, and detailed cost and schedule modeling to enhance bankability and execution readiness. Mesut Uzman, Chief Nuclear Construction Officer of Fermi America and CEO of Fermi Nuclear LLC, warned that AI-driven electricity load growth is outpacing traditional planning assumptions and argued that competitive advantage in the next decade will favor those able to deploy large-scale power infrastructure at speed.

Through Project Matador, Fermi America plans to integrate one of the nation’s largest new nuclear complexes with a major combined-cycle natural gas facility, grid interconnections, solar generation, and battery storage into a behind-the-meter private grid. The company’s strategy aims to deliver highly redundant, high-availability power at scale for hyperscale AI computing and advanced manufacturing, while rebuilding the U.S. nuclear construction workforce and supply chain to support additional future projects beyond Texas.
