Exero Medical has reported pivotal trial results showing its xBar post-surgical monitoring system can flag anastomotic leaks in colorectal surgery patients more than three days before they are typically detected in routine clinical practice. The multicenter study of 222 patients, presented at the 2026 American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Annual Scientific Meeting, found the FDA breakthrough-designated device delivered 100% sensitivity and 88% specificity by post-operative day three.
The company has submitted these data to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as part of a De Novo application, positioning xBar for potential commercial clearance and a targeted U.S. launch in 2027. Exero Medical’s system integrates sensors into a standard surgical drain to capture electrophysiological signals from the anastomotic site, which are then processed by proprietary algorithms to monitor tissue healing and detect early signs of complications.
Management positions this capability as a way to bring continuous, real-time data into post-operative decision making, potentially shortening hospital stays, reducing unnecessary imaging or interventions, and lowering mortality associated with leaks, one of the most serious risks in colorectal surgery. Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder Dr. Erez Shor said the platform aims to redefine post-operative care by offering clinicians a new, direct view into the recovery process, thereby supporting earlier and more selective intervention.
Principal investigator Dr. Mehraneh Dorna Jafari of Weill Cornell Medicine highlighted that shifting leak identification from day six to day three can mean the difference between a complication that is manageable and one that becomes life-threatening, underscoring the potential clinical and economic value of xBar adoption. The company is also exploring additional indications within the gastrointestinal tract and alternative device formats, which could broaden its addressable market if the current colorectal application secures clearance.
Founded in 2018 and backed by the Israeli Innovation Authority and several venture investors, Exero Medical operates from hubs in Jersey City, New Jersey, and Or Yehuda, Israel, leveraging a transatlantic infrastructure to support future commercialization. While xBar remains investigational and is not yet approved for sale in the United States, the pivotal results and active FDA engagement mark a critical inflection point for the company’s strategy to monetize its tissue-healing analytics platform in high-risk surgical settings.
