Entrata has released new nationwide survey results indicating a structural shift in how U.S. renters think about the American Dream, with 71% saying it is changing and 60% viewing it as less attainable under current economic conditions. Despite these headwinds, 61% still include homeownership in their long‑term goals, but are recalibrating timelines and expectations, a dynamic that directly shapes how property operators and technology providers like Entrata must design services and resident experiences.
The survey of more than 2,000 renters shows 75% now rank financial stability above owning a home, and 81% consider renting the smarter financial choice in the current environment, with over half expecting to still rent a decade from now. Entrata’s findings, including that 62% see financial stability as harder to achieve than it was for their parents and that flexibility now outweighs traditional notions of stability for many, especially Gen Z, underscore a long‑duration renter base and growing demand for flexible, tech‑enabled housing solutions, reinforcing the strategic importance of Entrata’s operating system in supporting owners, operators, and residents as renting becomes an intentional, long‑term financial strategy rather than a temporary stopgap.
