ElevenLabs is using SXSW in Austin to scale its ‘1 Million Voices’ initiative, a $1 billion in-kind commitment to provide free AI voice restoration to 1 million people with permanent voice loss. The company is launching a global outreach effort centered on the debut of “11 Voices,” a docuseries in which participants narrate their own stories using AI-generated versions of their voices.
The series follows 11 individuals in the U.S. and U.K. living with conditions such as ALS, cerebral palsy, stroke and brain injury, illustrating how voice restoration can enable a return to work, social activity and creative pursuits. Co‑founder Mati Staniszewski frames the program as core to ElevenLabs’ mission, emphasizing that restoring individual voices reinforces identity and independence while showcasing the practical impact of the firm’s foundational AI audio models.
At SXSW, ElevenLabs will premiere the docuseries during a live panel, “Hello Again: Restoring Voices with AI,” featuring Staniszewski and actor Rebecca Gayheart Dane, who is championing the initiative in honor of her late husband, actor Eric Dane, an early ALS user of the technology. The session will include a live demonstration by Yvonne Johnson, a program participant who will speak on stage using her ElevenLabs-powered voice, underscoring real-world usability for assistive communication.
Launched in 2024 as a small U.S. effort focused on ALS, the ‘1 Million Voices’ initiative has expanded to serve anyone worldwide with permanent voice loss, regardless of diagnosis. ElevenLabs reports it has already supported about 7,000 individuals and built a global network of more than 800 nonprofit and communications partners spanning 49 countries and all 50 U.S. states, positioning the company as a leading infrastructure provider for AI-enabled assistive voice solutions.
Eligible participants receive a lifetime ElevenLabs license, using historical recordings to build a personal voice model that can be integrated with assistive devices for everyday communication. ElevenLabs stresses that users retain full ownership and control of their voice models, a key governance and trust factor as AI voice cloning faces growing regulatory and ethical scrutiny and as enterprises evaluate responsible vendors in the AI audio space.
The initiative directly supports ElevenLabs’ broader platform strategy, which includes ElevenAgents for customer experience automation, ElevenCreative for audio and multimedia content generation and ElevenAPI for developers, by strengthening its brand, dataset diversity and proof points in sensitive, high-stakes use cases. The company is leveraging the visibility of SXSW and the 11 Voices distribution across its own channels, YouTube and Spotify to attract more eligible users and nonprofit partners, particularly in Latin America and the Global South, where it is actively expanding collaborations.
For executives assessing ElevenLabs as a partner or competitor, the program demonstrates a large-scale, globally distributed deployment of personalized AI voice models, underscoring the firm’s capabilities in multilingual model training, compliance, reliability and integration with third-party assistive hardware. It also functions as a long-term strategic investment in social impact and ecosystem building that could enhance regulatory goodwill and differentiate ElevenLabs in an increasingly crowded AI audio market.
ElevenLabs is actively encouraging individuals with permanent voice loss and organizations that support them to apply through its impact program portal, signaling that the company is still in a growth and data-acquisition phase for its voice restoration technology. As adoption scales, the initiative may generate downstream opportunities in healthcare, accessibility and enterprise communications, while reinforcing ElevenLabs’ positioning as a foundational AI audio provider serving millions of users and thousands of businesses worldwide.
