DJI has expanded its FPV and aerial imaging portfolio with the launch of the Avata 360, a new flagship 8K 360° drone positioned to deepen its hold on the creator and prosumer market. The platform centers on dual 1-inch-equivalent sensors capable of capturing 8K/60fps HDR 360° video and 120 MP stills, while also supporting a single-lens 4K/60fps Avata-style capture mode to preserve compatibility with existing FPV workflows.

The system integrates DJI’s O4+ video transmission, delivering 1080p/60fps live feeds with a claimed range of up to 20 km and enhanced anti-interference performance, reinforcing DJI’s control of high-reliability video links for FPV use cases. Avata 360 offers up to 23 minutes of flight time and adds night-capable omnidirectional obstacle sensing and integrated propeller guards, targeting safer operation in dense or complex environments often used by content creators.

DJI is bundling Avata 360 tightly with its existing ecosystem, including support for DJI goggles, RC 2, RC-N2, and RC-N3 remote controllers and the RC Motion 3, allowing both immersive FPV flight and precision aerial filming on a single platform. The company is emphasizing post-production flexibility via DJI Fly and DJI Studio, enabling reframing of 360° footage, virtual gimbal moves, and intelligent tracking of subjects, which can extend a single 360° capture into multiple deliverables for social, commercial, or broadcast formats.

The drone introduces software features such as Spotlight Free, ActiveTrack 360°, FPV mode in post, Intelligent Tracking, GyroFrame-based one-tap editing, and a Virtual Gimbal that leverages the full 360° sphere to simulate complex camera moves without re-flights. These capabilities, combined with 42 GB of internal storage—enough for about 30 minutes of 8K 360° footage—and Wi-Fi 6 high-speed transfers up to 100 MB/s, are designed to compress production time and reduce on-set hardware requirements.

From a commercial standpoint, DJI is segmenting pricing with multiple configurations: £409 for the drone only, £639 for a package with DJI RC 2, and £829 for Fly More and Motion Fly More combos, signaling a push for higher-margin bundle sales around its controller and goggle ecosystem. The rollout is supported by DJI Care Refresh, which extends the company’s recurring-revenue protection model to Avata 360 with one- and two-year plans covering flyaways, collisions, and water damage, along with paid replacement options.

By combining FPV flight, 360° capture, and integrated software-driven editing, Avata 360 strengthens DJI’s competitive position against action and 360 camera vendors while deepening lock-in to its proprietary hardware and software stack. For stakeholders, the release underscores DJI’s strategy to move beyond traditional drone cinematography into a broader immersive media and virtual production workflow, which could support higher accessory attach rates, greater software usage, and incremental service revenue over the product’s life cycle.
