Discord has pushed back its global age verification rollout from March to the second half of 2026, recalibrating a major trust-and-safety initiative that had triggered strong user backlash. The company will now limit mandatory verification to roughly 10% of its user base that accesses age-restricted content, while 90% will continue using the service without change, relying on internal signals such as account age, payment methods, and server participation to infer adulthood.

CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy acknowledged that the initial communication led many users to believe all accounts would require facial scans or government ID uploads, and said Discord had failed to clearly explain its approach and rationale. Before any global expansion, Discord plans to add more verification options, including credit card checks, and commit to vendors that perform verification entirely on users’ devices, following criticism of prior partners and concerns heightened by an October disclosure that about 70,000 users’ sensitive ID data had been exposed via a third-party breach.
