Databricks’ co-founder and CTO, Matei Zaharia, has been awarded the 2026 ACM Prize in Computing for his work creating Apache Spark, the core technology that underpins Databricks’ data and AI platform and catalyzed the company’s growth into a leading data infrastructure provider. Spark’s ability to dramatically accelerate large-scale data processing laid the technical and commercial foundation for Databricks, which has since evolved from big data analytics into a central data and AI layer for enterprises.
Under Zaharia’s technical leadership, Databricks has scaled into a major private player reportedly valued at about $134 billion, with approximately $5.4 billion in revenue and more than $20 billion raised, positioning it as a key infrastructure vendor in the current AI and agents cycle. Zaharia’s public comments on AI, including his view that artificial general intelligence is already emerging in non-human-like forms and his warnings about security risks from agentic systems that mimic human assistants, signal Databricks’ likely focus on secure, research-grade AI and advanced data-centric tooling for enterprises.
