Chainguard has introduced Catalog Starter, a free tier that gives developers access to five production-grade container images from its catalog of base, application, and AI images, positioning the company to broaden top-of-funnel adoption and standardization on its secure-by-default software. The move targets teams ranging from individual developers to large enterprises, allowing them to use the same continuously rebuilt, minimal images that paying customers deploy in production, which could support future conversion to larger commercial contracts.
The launch comes as AI-assisted development accelerates code creation and open source consumption, expanding the attack surface and increasing demand for hardened, trusted artifacts at the start of the software lifecycle. By opening its “world’s largest trusted image catalog,” as CEO Dan Lorenc describes it, Chainguard is aiming to entrench its platform as a default source of secure components, supported by digital resources such as documentation, courses, and a Slack community that may reduce customer onboarding friction and support costs.
Catalog Starter leverages the Chainguard Factory, the company’s AI-centric software factory, which has doubled the catalog over the past year to more than 2,200 open source projects, about 400,000 architecture-specific image versions, and 30,000 Chainguard OS packages, strengthening the firm’s scale advantage. Recent feature additions—including Community Helm Charts for easier deployment, richer SBOMs, expanded customization options such as Custom Certificate support, and Private APK Repositories—further embed Chainguard in customers’ workflows and could increase switching costs and upsell potential over time.
Industry analysts note that wider access to hardened images raises the security baseline for the container ecosystem and reduces downstream remediation work, reinforcing Chainguard’s positioning in software supply chain security. For executives, the key implications are an expanded freemium channel that can drive developer-led adoption, deeper integration of Chainguard’s tooling into cloud-native and AI workloads, and a stronger competitive moat built on catalog breadth, AI-driven rebuild automation, and compliance-friendly, production-ready images used by blue-chip customers such as Fortune 500 enterprises.
