Canary Technologies has acquired the assets of OpenKey, a mobile key pioneer for hotels, in a move that substantially strengthens Canary’s position in digital guest access and end-to-end guest management. The deal expands Canary’s existing Mobile Key platform with broader door-lock integrations and access options, enabling compatibility with more lock models and manufacturers worldwide. By folding OpenKey’s technology into its AI-powered Guest Management System—which already includes Mobile Check-In, AI Guest Messaging, Digital Tipping, and Dynamic Upsells—Canary aims to offer hotel groups a more unified, mobile-first stack that reduces friction at arrival and throughout the guest journey. While financial terms were not disclosed, the acquisition clearly targets scale and standardization in keyless entry to accelerate industry adoption of mobile access solutions.
Management positions the transaction as a strategic investment to meet rising guest expectations for seamless, smartphone-based room access and to deepen Canary’s product moat. CEO Harman Singh Narula said the acquisition makes Canary’s Mobile Key solution the most comprehensive in the market and supports a broader shift toward frictionless, fully digital stays. OpenKey, founded in 2014, brings established relationships with hotels, resorts, and casinos that can feed Canary’s global expansion across more than 20,000 hotels in over 100 countries. The deal follows a period of strong momentum for Canary, including multiple HotelTech awards and repeat inclusion in Deloitte’s Fast 500, and is likely to enhance cross-sell opportunities across its guest experience portfolio. For hotel owners and operators, the combined platform offers a single provider for mobile keys and guest engagement, with potential operational savings, higher ancillary revenue via upsells, and improved guest satisfaction as keyless, app-enabled stays become a standard expectation in hospitality.
