ByteDance has postponed the international launch of its Seedance 2.0 AI video model after early use in China triggered a wave of intellectual property complaints from major Hollywood studios, according to The Information. The model, introduced domestically in February and capable of generating realistic short clips, went viral when users created scenes such as Tom Cruise fighting Brad Pitt, prompting industry outrage and highlighting substantial legal and reputational risks for the company.
Studios, including Disney, reportedly sent cease-and-desist letters accusing ByteDance of effectively expropriating protected content, pressure that has forced the company’s engineers and lawyers to rework the product’s safeguards before any global release. ByteDance, which has pledged stronger IP protections, had targeted mid-March for an overseas rollout but is now facing an open-ended delay that could slow its entry into high-value generative video markets, complicate regulatory perceptions, and impact its broader AI monetization strategy outside China.
