BriefCatch has introduced RealityCheck, a new verification capability designed to flag fabricated citations, misstated holdings, unsupported legal propositions, and hallucinated authorities in legal documents, marking a significant expansion of its platform beyond writing enhancement into citation integrity and AI risk management. The launch follows a global rise in AI-related authority errors, with more than 1,000 decisions already identified as involving hallucinations, prompting sanctions and, in some cases, disqualification of counsel.

RealityCheck operates inside existing drafting and review workflows for law firms and courts, performing a two-layer analysis that first confirms case and statute citations against authoritative databases and then uses AI models to verify that quoted language appears in the underlying opinion and that the authority supports the cited proposition. In a real-world test on a Fifth Circuit brief in Fletcher v. Experian Information Solutions, Inc., the tool surfaced every error later criticized by the court, plus additional problems it did not mention, in a case where counsel was sanctioned for relying on generative AI without proper review. BriefCatch, which recently closed a Series A round and acquired WordRake’s patented editing technology, is positioning RealityCheck—available within its Next platform and as a standalone product for firms and courts—as a way to reduce AI-driven litigation risk and strengthen the integrity of filings, while creating a new growth vector in compliance-focused legal tech.
