Anthropic is pushing to preserve and deepen its U.S. government relationships even after the Pentagon labeled the AI company a supply-chain risk, a designation typically aimed at foreign adversaries that could sharply constrain federal adoption of its models. Co-founder Jack Clark has characterized the dispute with the Department of Defense as a narrow contracting conflict over safeguards on the use of Anthropic’s technology, particularly around fully autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance, and has stressed that it will not limit the company’s willingness to brief policymakers on its latest AI systems.
In parallel, other parts of the Trump administration appear to be engaging more closely with Anthropic, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell reportedly urging major banks to test the company’s new Mythos model and the White House confirming an introductory, “productive and constructive” meeting between CEO Dario Amodei, Bessent, and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. Anthropic said the talks focused on collaboration with senior officials around cybersecurity, preserving U.S. leadership in the global AI race, and AI safety, and the company signaled it expects to continue these discussions, while it simultaneously challenges the Pentagon’s risk designation in court and weighs the divergent stance of civilian agencies, where an administration source indicated that every department other than Defense is interested in using Anthropic’s technology.
