Anthropic is broadening its agentic AI product line with the launch of Cowork, a new tool embedded in the Claude Desktop app that makes its Claude Code capabilities accessible to non-technical users and business functions. Cowork allows users to grant Claude controlled access to a specific folder so it can read, modify, and act on files via natural-language instructions, effectively turning Claude into a sandboxed operational agent without requiring command-line skills or developer setup. Initially available in research preview for Claude Max subscribers, with a waitlist for other tiers, Cowork is built on the Claude Agent SDK and uses the same underlying model as Claude Code, giving Anthropic a cleaner product ladder from power users to mainstream knowledge workers and operational teams. By design, the folder-based access model simplifies permissioning and data governance, enabling business users to apply AI to tasks such as expense processing from receipt photos, media file organization, social media content review, and conversation analysis, and it positions Anthropic to capture more daily workflow time in enterprise environments.
Anthropic frames Cowork as a response to emerging usage patterns, noting that many Claude Code subscribers already use the tool for non-coding, general-purpose automation tasks, signaling strong demand for agentic AI beyond software engineering. The company also highlights the associated risk profile: Cowork can execute chains of actions autonomously, raising exposure to prompt injection, accidental file deletion, or unintended modifications if instructions are vague, and Anthropic’s guidance emphasizes clear task specification and cautious deployment in sensitive environments. Strategically, Cowork extends the success of Claude Code, which launched as a command-line tool in November 2024 and has since gained a web interface and Slack integration, underscoring Anthropic’s push to multiply touchpoints and deepen engagement per user. For executives, the move suggests Anthropic is leaning into workflow-centric, file-level automation as a core growth vector, using its agent SDK and tiered access model to drive upsell to higher plans, increase product stickiness, and compete more directly in the emerging market for enterprise-grade AI agents that go beyond chat into real operational work.
