ORCL vs. PLTR: Which AI Stock Is the Better Buy in May, According to Analysts?

Oracle (ORCL) and Palantir (PLTR) are both being treated as AI winners, but Wall Street’s recent commentary suggests they are very different trades. Oracle is the AI infrastructure bet, with analysts focused on cloud capacity, backlog conversion, and whether its huge spending can turn into profitable growth. In contrast, Palantir is the AI software momentum story, with analysts praising demand from government and commercial customers, but repeatedly warning that valuation remains the biggest risk. Nevertheless, Palantir edges out Oracle slightly as the better Buy.

Oracle: Big AI Backlog, but Big Spending Risk

The recent bull case for Oracle comes from Bank of America (BAC), which reinstated coverage with a Buy rating and a $200 price target. Five-star analyst Tal Liani described Oracle as “a giant going all-in on AI infrastructure and the cloud,” thanks to its massive AI backlog. However, the same analysis also flagged the main concern, which is that Oracle’s capex could reach about $50 billion in FY 2026 and keep rising through FY 2029, while free cash flow may remain negative over that period.

That is why some analysts remain cautious. For instance, RBC Capital’s (RY) Rishi Jaluria cut his Oracle price target to $160 from $195 while keeping a Hold rating due to financing concerns tied to the company’s AI infrastructure buildout. Therefore, the analyst debate is not about whether Oracle has AI demand, but rather if the company can fund and fulfill that demand without damaging the balance sheet or disappointing investors.

Palantir: Stronger Growth, but Valuation Is the Problem

Alternatively, Palantir has more obvious near-term momentum. In fact, Bank of America, led by five-star analyst Mariana Perez Mora, has remained bullish on the stock, as it views Palantir as one of the clearest enterprise AI winners. This is due to its strong product adoption, growing margins, and the ability to convert AI demand into real revenue growth. Wedbush has also been positive, with analyst Dan Ives arguing that Palantir remains one of the best pure-play AI software stories as government and commercial customers increase adoption.

However, the problem is that a lot of that optimism is already priced in, thereby making valuation the main risk. As a result, five-star-rated Deutsche Bank (DB) analyst Brad Zelnick raised his target to $200 from $160 but kept his rating at Hold because the stock remains expensive, while RBC maintained a Sell rating with a $50 target despite strong growth.

Wall Street Price Targets

Overall, out of the two stocks mentioned above, analysts’ consensus is that PLTR stock has more room to run than ORCL. In fact, PLTR’s price target of $188.31 per share implies 39.2% upside versus ORCL’s 37.1%.
