AI firm OpenAI has signed a large new deal with chip startup Cerebras Systems to secure more computing power for ChatGPT and its other AI tools. Under this agreement, OpenAI will use Cerebras-designed chips and buy up to 750 megawatts of computing capacity over the next three years, which The Wall Street Journal says is worth more than $10 billion. This comes as OpenAI now serves more than 900 million users every week and is running into serious limits on the amount of computing power it can access. It is also worth noting that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is a personal investor in Cerebras, and the two companies first discussed working together back in 2017.
