OpenAI-Rival Anthropic Heats Up AI Race with $200 Per Month Subscription

OpenAI-rival Anthropic is intensifying the AI (artificial intelligence) race with its newly launched $200 per month subscription plan, Claude Max. The premium offering provides higher usage limits compared to Anthropic’s standard Claude Pro plan, priced at $20 per month. Users of Claude Max plans will get first-hand access to Anthropic’s latest AI features and models. Anthropic also plans to launch a voice mode for Claude, which will be available only to Max subscribers.

The Claude Max subscription will be available in two variants: the $100 per month plan will offer 5x higher rate limits than the Claude Pro, and the $200 per month plan will offer 20x higher rate limits. According to Product Lead Scott White, the new Max plan was launched in response to growing demand from professional users who use Claude for coding, financial services, media, and marketing applications.

Anthropic Is Becoming a Fierce OpenAI Rival

AI model developers like Anthropic and ChatGPT-maker OpenAI are constantly looking for new ways to boost their revenues, and launching tiered subscription plans is an apt way to do that. White told in an interview that the AI startup could launch even more expensive subscription plans in the future based on user feedback. Notably, OpenAI has an unlimited usage plan, ChatGPT Pro, priced at $200 per month.

Last week, Anthropic launched Claude for Education program, which allows universities and education institutions to implement AI-enabled teaching solutions. Anthropic’s valuation is also rising rapidly, with its latest funding round in March pegging it at $61.5 billion. In December 2024, Anthropic said that its annualized revenue jumped ten times year-over-year to reach $1 billion. Some of Anthropic’s large enterprise clients include Snowflake (SNOW), Pfizer (PFE), and Novo Nordisk (NVO). Meanwhile, the startup is backed by two tech giants, Amazon (AMZN) and Google parent Alphabet (GOOGL).
