OpenAI May Be Expanding into Humanoid Robots

OpenAI, the AI company behind ChatGPT and that is backed by tech giant Microsoft (MSFT), is now likely expanding into robotics, according to Wired. The company has been hiring researchers who specialize in using artificial intelligence to control robots, especially those that are humanoid or partly humanoid. People familiar with the project say that OpenAI is training AI models that can help robots understand and move around the real world, which shows a clear interest in combining AI with physical machines.

As part of this shift, OpenAI has posted several job listings for robotics engineers. One key addition is Chengshu Li, who joined from Stanford University this summer. His past research focused on building robots that can perform everyday household tasks, suggesting that OpenAI may be working on robots for both home and practical use. The company’s listings have also included roles like EE Sensing Engineer and Robotics Mechanical Design Engineer.

It is worth noting that OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, provided a glimpse into his long-term vision in a blog post from June. Indeed, he imagined a future where the first million humanoid robots are built manually, but after that, the robots themselves could run the full supply chain. This includes digging up raw materials, transporting them, operating factories, and building more robots, along with the data centers and chip-making plants needed to power AI. If that becomes possible, Altman said, the speed of technological progress could increase dramatically.
