OpenAI Is Bringing Group Chats to More ChatGPT Users

Microsoft-backed (MSFT) AI firm OpenAI (PC:OPAIQ) is now bringing group chats to more ChatGPT users worldwide after early tests got positive feedback. Over the next few days, anyone using ChatGPT will start seeing the new group chat feature. The idea is to help people work together more easily, with ChatGPT included in the conversation. Importantly, these group chats are separate from your private chats, and ChatGPT won’t use your personal memory in group settings. Indeed, when adding someone, ChatGPT creates a fresh group chat so your original conversation stays untouched.

Interestingly, up to 20 people can be invited with a link, and anyone in the group can pass that link along. Users will be asked to set up a short profile with a name, photo, and username, and the chats will show up in a clearly labeled section in the sidebar for easy access. ChatGPT will work the same as usual, but will now respond based on the best model available to each user. However, all tools, like file upload, image generation, and dictation, are included. Moreover, ChatGPT responses count toward the response limit of the person it’s replying to, not toward messages between users.

There are also privacy controls built in. A user always has to accept an invite before joining and can leave whenever they want. Notably, the group creator can’t be removed unless they leave the chat themselves. In addition, if anyone under 18 uses group chats, ChatGPT automatically limits exposure to sensitive content, and parents can turn group chats off through parental settings. OpenAI says it will continue improving the feature based on how people use it.
