OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT for Users Under 18

AI firm OpenAI, which is backed by tech giant Microsoft (MSFT), has introduced a new version of ChatGPT specifically designed for users under 18, with extra safety features and parental controls. Indeed, if ChatGPT can tell that someone is a minor, it will automatically show them a safer version that blocks graphic and sexual content. In addition, in rare and serious cases where a teen seems very distressed, the system may even involve law enforcement. OpenAI is also building technology to better guess users’ ages, but if it’s unsure, it will play it safe and show the under-18 version by default.

Unsurprisingly, this update comes after the U.S. government started looking into how AI tools affect kids. In fact, the Federal Trade Commission is investigating OpenAI and other tech companies to find out if they have taken steps to protect teens when chatbots are used like digital companions. The safety issue became more serious after a family blamed ChatGPT for their teenage son’s suicide and filed a lawsuit. In response, OpenAI explained how it handles emotional and sensitive situations.

To help parents, OpenAI is rolling out tools at the end of the month that let them control how their teens use ChatGPT. Parents will be able to connect their account to their child’s, set blackout hours when the chatbot can’t be used, turn off certain features, guide how it replies, and even get alerts if their teen is in serious emotional trouble. Interestingly, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, said the firm is putting safety before privacy for teens because this new technology is powerful and needs strong protections.
