OpenAI Moves to Give EU Access to GPT-5.5-Cyber
OpenAI said on May 11 that it plans to give the EU access to GPT-5.5-Cyber, a cybersecurity-focused version of its latest AI model. The company noted that European businesses, governments, cyber agencies, and institutions like the EU AI Office would be allowed to test the model.
OpenAI also confirmed that GPT-5.5-Cyber is being rolled out in a limited preview to selected cybersecurity teams. After the firm’s announcement, European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said at a press conference that they welcomed OpenAI’s transparency and its decision to provide access to the new model.
He made the remarks on May 11 during the same briefing where he discussed ongoing talks between the EU and OpenAI. According to Regnier, the company has been “proactive” in its talks with regulators. He also confirmed that more meetings were expected this week to discuss access to the model and how regulators can closely monitor its use.
Anthropic Holds Back Mythos Access as EU Talks Lag Behind OpenAI
While the EU is also in talks with Anthropic, officials said those discussions are still at a “different stage” from OpenAI’s. Regnier said the European Commission has already held several meetings with Anthropic. However, no agreement has yet been reached regarding access to Mythos.
Anthropic has defended its cautious approach, arguing that the model could become dangerous if released too widely. After all, during its preview phase under Anthropic’s new initiative, Project Glasswing, the Mythos AI reportedly found thousands of zero-day flaws in software used by major companies such as Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT).
Meanwhile, OpenAI says wider access to defensive AI tools is important for improving cybersecurity across Europe. George Osborne, Head of Countries at OpenAI, said the firm wants trusted governments, institutions, and businesses to have access to tools that can strengthen digital security and support public safety across the region.
Anthropic has not publicly responded to the latest developments.
