OpenAI, the Microsoft (MSFT)-backed AI company, has introduced new parental controls for ChatGPT, allowing parents to link their accounts with their teenagers’ accounts to customize settings and improve safety. The update comes after a wrongful death lawsuit alleged that ChatGPT played a role in a teen’s suicide.

OpenAI said it worked with experts and policymakers, including Common Sense Media and state attorneys general, to build this approach. It plans to keep improving these features over time.
Key Features of the New Controls
The feature requires the consent of both the parent and the teen to link accounts. Parents cannot view their teen’s chat history, but the linked account unlocks several customizable safety features.
These include the reduced sensitive content setting, which is on by default once accounts are linked, and adds protections to limit content like sexual roleplay, graphic content, and extreme beauty standards.
Importantly, this feature allows parents to schedule times when their teenager will not be able to access ChatGPT. Also, they can disable features such as image generation and voice mode.
Also, parents can decide whether their teen’s chat transcripts and files can be used by OpenAI to improve its AI models.
Finally, OpenAI has updated its system to alert parents if ChatGPT detects signs of acute distress or self-harm in a teen’s conversations. Parents can choose how they wish to receive alerts, via email, SMS, push notification, or both, or opt out of notifications entirely.
