Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang Calls for Quick End to the Anthropic and Pentagon Standoff

Nvidia (NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang has weighed in on the ongoing dispute between Claude AI creator Anthropic and the Trump administration. Huang has called for both sides to work out their differences during an interview at the Milken Global Conference in Los Angeles on May 4. This is not the first time Huang has weighed in on the dispute. He first broke his silence on the issue in late February.

Nvidia CEO Backs Anthropic Despite Differences

In a CNBC interview with Becky Quick, Huang expressed hope that the U.S. government and Anthropic could reach a mutual agreement. He called Anthropic an “incredible company” with a “deep-rooted belief system”. He also pointed to its work on Claude Code, agentic AI models, and other products as very remarkable.

However, he made clear that he does not agree with all of the AI firm’s views. According to Huang, both he and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recognize that such disagreements do not have to hurt their working ties, adding that they keep those differences apart.

Huang also drew a clear line between the roles of tech executives and elected officials. He said when the U.S. goes to war, he prefers not to be asked whether his technology should be used, as that decision belongs to the government. But he added that if he disagrees, he can still act as a citizen and exercise his rights.

Pentagon Signs New AI Deals, Leaves Anthropic Out

On May 1, the Pentagon announced a new deal with several AI and tech firms. They include OpenAI, SpaceX, Nvidia, Google (GOOGL), Microsoft (MSFT), Oracle (ORCL), Reflection AI, and Amazon (AMZN) through its Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform. The deal covers the use of their AI systems across the U.S. military’s classified networks. However, Anthropic was not included.

Notably, the issue between Anthropic and the U.S. government began after the firm declined to use its AI for unrestricted military use. In July 2025, the Department of Defense (DoD) awarded Anthropic a contract worth up to $200 million to expand its use of AI for national security.

Yet, talks fell apart when the Pentagon demanded access to Claude for uses, including fully autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance, and Anthropic declined. By March 2026, the DoD labeled Anthropic a supply chain risk after it refused those terms. Since then, Anthropic has filed two lawsuits against the U.S. government, which are still ongoing as of May 5, 2026.
