Microsoft (MSFT) Will Equip NFL Teams with AI to Improve in-Game Decision Making

Tech giant Microsoft (MSFT) is expanding its partnership with the NFL by equipping teams with AI-powered tools in order to improve decision-making during games. By using technologies like Copilot and Azure AI, along with the Sideline Viewing System, Microsoft hopes to help offensive and defensive playcallers make smarter and faster decisions in real time. This move is part of a collaboration between Microsoft and the NFL, which now includes distributing Surface Copilot+ PCs to players and coaches across the league.

Unsurprisingly, according to NFL Chief Information Officer Gary Brantley, this is a new era of innovation for the league. Indeed, Brantley emphasized that improving the league’s capabilities is a serious responsibility, and Microsoft’s tools are helping in this regard. Interestingly, coaches like Sean McVay of the Los Angeles Rams also believe that the technology can reduce distractions and lead to better and more consistent decisions during high-pressure game situations.

It is also worth noting that the AI tools are expected to play a role in off-field preparation. For example, players and coaches can use them to review playbooks, study game footage, and prepare for upcoming matchups. Given that there are a lot of moving parts in a football game, this extra layer of intelligence is designed to streamline how information is used throughout the season.
