Between May 2025 and April 2026, GitHub recorded 257 separate incidents, 48 of which were major outages. Since March this year, the platform has experienced more than a dozen outages, lasting over an hour.
The surge in AI-assisted coding has been the primary driver behind these challenges. As more developers adopted AI tools to write and review code, the load on GitHub grew faster than the platform could handle, exposing weaknesses in the system.
A major factor behind the instability is GitHub’s slow and incomplete migration to Azure, Microsoft’s cloud computing platform. Currently, only part of GitHub’s traffic has been moved to Azure data centers, while its older systems are still under heavy workload. This split setup has struggled under the extra workload, contributing to GitHub’s recurring downtime.
Developers and businesses have also voiced their frustration about the issue. Some warned that GitHub is becoming unreliable for serious production work. In addition to outages, the platform has faced security incidents and leadership changes after the exit of its former CEO. Together, these problems have added more pressure on its engineering teams and raised questions about GitHub’s stability.
Microsoft Faces Rising Competition in AI Coding Space
Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot has been leading the AI-assisted coding sector for years, but the competition has shifted rapidly recently. Tools like Cursor, built by Anysphere, a software firm, and Claude Code, made by Anthropic, an AI company, are now catching up, as more developers and businesses use them.
According to reports, Cursor has already overtaken Copilot in usage among some developer groups. At the same time, other coding platforms from firms like ChatGPT creator OpenAI, GitLab (GTLB), Amazon (AMZN), and Atlassian (TEAM) are also gaining investors’ interest. These rivals benefit from faster development cycles and stronger adoption of AI-native coding workflows.
Despite the heated competition, GitHub remains one of the largest developer platforms globally, with over 180 million users and a strong base in AI coding. However, increasing preference for newer AI tools is putting pressure on Microsoft to strengthen its Copilot’s capabilities.
