Microsoft (MSFT) Axes Outlook Lite App, Users Forced to Switch Before Deadline

Microsoft (MSFT) has announced that it will officially shut down Outlook Lite on May 25, 2026, ending the lightweight e-mail app’s four-year run. The company confirmed the final date on April 13 and is directing existing users to switch to the full Outlook Mobile app ahead of the deadline.

Microsoft Outlook Lite Set to Lose All Functionality

Microsoft has confirmed that the Outlook Lite app will lose functionality for existing users next month. While downloads have already been restricted, the final shutdown will disable mailbox access, in-app navigation, and other core features.

To avoid service disruption, Microsoft is advising users to switch to the standard Outlook Mobile app before the shutdown date. To support this transition, the company has added an “Upgrade” button within Outlook Lite that directs users to the Play Store to download the full app.

The company noted that user data, including emails, calendar items, and attachments, is still tied to individual accounts rather than the app itself. This means users can still access their information when they sign in to the main Outlook Mobile app.

Why Microsoft is Ending Outlook Lite

According to Microsoft, the decision to retire Outlook Lite is part of a broader strategy to reduce overlap and focus resources on a single feature-rich Outlook Mobile for Android and Apple’s (AAPL) IOS. The main Outlook app offers stronger security, which is important for sensitive email use. It also delivers better performance and deeper integration with Microsoft 365 than the Lite version.

Outlook Lite was launched in 2022 as a simplified version for Android devices with limited storage and regions with slower internet connectivity. However, Microsoft removed the app from the Google Play Store in October 2025, effectively ending new downloads. Although MSFT stock fell about 10% to 12% in late January after its earnings report, the decline was mainly driven by concerns over high AI infrastructure spending and was not linked to the Outlook Lite shutdown.
