Meta Stock (META) Marches On Despite EU Concerns Over Facebook Data

Meta Platforms stock (META) edged higher today as Ireland’s technology watchdog praised it for making improvements to its artificial intelligence tool MetaAI.

Irish Eyes

However, the Irish Data Protection Authority (DPA) warned the U.S. tech giant that it was still keeping a close eye on its AI practices.

Meta said back in 2024 that it was planning to train its Large Language Models or LLMs as they are known in AI circles using public data shared by adult users of its Facebook and Instagram sites across the EU.

Ever since that statement Meta has been in the crosshairs of the Irish watchdog due to data protection concerns. Ireland is at the forefront of this for the continent as Meta has its EU headquarters in Dublin.

Meta rolled out the tool across the EU in April but the watchdog is keeping a close eye on what it is doing.

October Deadline

The Irish DPA said that Meta agreed to implement measures and improvements, including updated transparency notices to users, easier to use objection form, updated measures to protect users and updated risk assessments.

“As part of our ongoing monitoring, the DPA has required Meta to compile a report which, amongst other things, will set out an updated evaluation of the efficacy and appropriateness of the measures and safeguards it has introduced regarding the processing taking place. This report is expected in October 2025,” the statement said.

It adds to European pressure on Meta. Users of Facebook and Instagram in Belgium, Netherlands and the German state of Hamburg already have until May 2027 to object to their public data being trained to use Meta’s tool.

Meta has also got history with the DPA receiving a €251 million in 2024 relating to a Facebook data breach.
