The desktop Messenger app, also called Facebook Messenger, can no longer be used on Windows or Mac computers, according to Meta Platforms. Users have 60 days left to use the app before it is permanently blocked by the company.
In an online post, Meta wrote: “We encourage you to delete the app since it will no longer be usable” for Mac and Windows users. While no public reason has been given for why the desktop apps are being discontinued, analysts say it could be due to declining use and engagement in the workplace.
There are many competing messenger apps that people use to quickly communicate with one another in the workforce, including Slack and Microsoft (MSFT) Teams.
Other Versions of Meta’s App
People continuing to use Meta Platforms’ Messenger app are now being prompted to use the website version or access the app via their smartphone. The technology giant says that conversations will be saved and available when logging into Facebook.com or Messenger.com.
Saved conversations are also available through Messenger’s mobile app, as long as users follow certain steps to access them. Those steps include setting up a PIN from the desktop app to save their chat history. Meta Platforms is adjusting its social media applications as it focuses more on artificial intelligence (AI).
Is META Stock a Buy?
The stock of Meta Platforms has a consensus Strong Buy rating among 43 Wall Street analysts. That rating is based on 36 Buy, six Hold, and one Sell recommendations issued in the last three months. The average META price target of $830.73 implies 28.30% upside from current levels.
