Verizon (VZ), the largest wireless internet provider in the U.S. said it is experiencing a massive outage that is impacting 180,000 of its customers.

The telecommunications giant said that the issue involves wireless internet and data services throughout America. In a social media post, Verizon said: “Our engineers are engaged and are working to identify and solve the issue quickly.”
The website DownDetector said that 179,000 Verizon customers had reported problems beginning at noon on Jan. 14. Many of the outages are occurring in major U.S. cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Seattle.

(about 1,700) users also reported problems starting at noon, the site said. T-Mobile said it has confirmed that its network is operating normally, but that “due to Verizon’s reported outage, our customers may not be able to reach someone with Verizon service at this time.”
AT&T said its network was operating normally.
Anna Gomez, a commissioner at the Federal Communications Commission, said in a social media post that she was paying close attention to reports of the wireless outage. “I’ll be asking our Consumer/Public Safety Bureaus to keep a close eye on this situation and investigate the source of this service disruption,” she said.
