ORCL stock has been on an upward stride this year, thanks to the AI (artificial intelligence) frenzy and the company’s prominent role in President Trump’s $500 billion project Stargate. Interestingly, Ellison was also on the board of directors of Tesla (TSLA) and held roughly 45 million split-adjusted stock (1.4%) of the EV (electric vehicle) maker before he stepped down as director in 2022.

Ellison’s Early Journey to Fame

Ellison did not complete his graduation. He dropped out of the University of Illinois and the University of Chicago to pursue his interest in writing computer codes for customers. He co-founded Oracle in 1977 with Bob Miner and Ed Oates. The company won some of its first notable contracts from the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Oracle was the first company to launch structured query language (SQL) for managing large relational databases. Oracle’s business soon expanded, and Ellison took the company public in 1986. Ellison has successfully navigated Oracle through the tough times of the dot-com bubble in the late 90s, the Great Financial Crisis of the 2000s, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ellison’s Wealth Creation Timeline

Ellison’s wealth fluctuates with the changes in Oracle’s stock price. However, the massive jump in his wealth shows how Oracle’s value has expanded in recent years, with the software giant becoming one of the largest companies in the world.

  • 2015 – $54.3 billion
  • 2019 – $62.5 billion
  • 2021 – $93 billion
  • 2022 – $106 billion
  • 2024 – $141 billion

Ellison Lives a Lavish Lifestyle

Some of Ellison’s other priced possessions include a sailing team, the Indian Wells tennis event, expensive real estate, and luxurious yachts and planes. Currently, he resides at his privately owned Lanai Island in Hawaii. Meanwhile, like every other billionaire, Ellison also has a philanthropic side to this extravagant avatar. He signed the Giving Pledge in 2010, promising to donate at least 95% of his wealth toward charitable missions.
