Jeff Bezos’ AI Start-up Project Prometheus Expands with General Agents Acquisition

Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s (AMZN) founder and executive chairman, is preparing to shake the AI sector through Project Prometheus, an AI startup he co-leads with technology entrepreneur Vik Bajaj. The company has reportedly acquired General Agents, a young AI firm known for its work on agentic systems, AI designed to perform real-world tasks rather than simply generate text.

It is worth noting that General Agents developed Ace, a computer-automation system that allows AI agents to handle repetitive office tasks and potentially scale into more complex industrial applications.

The acquisition strengthens Prometheus’ capabilities in agentic AI and reflects its focus on physical AI and large-scale automation, a sector emerging as the next stage of robotics.

Project Prometheus’ Vision

Backed by $6.2 billion in funding, Project Prometheus is building AI systems that can support the manufacturing of computers, cars, and even spacecraft. Its mission centers on “physical AI,” bringing automation beyond digital tasks into factories, warehouses, and production lines.

Bezos’ involvement marks his first operational role since stepping down as Amazon CEO in 2021. His return reflects the seriousness of Prometheus’ ambitions, especially as he competes with other billionaire-led AI ventures, such as Elon Musk‘s Grok and xAI (PC:XAIIQ) and Sam Altman’s OpenAI (PC:OPAIQ).
