U.S. chess champion Hikaru Nakamura is riding the tech wave as his TipRanks investment portfolio continues to surge ahead of the S&P 500.

Overall, Hikaru’s portfolio has a total return of 36%. It is up by 23.5% compared with the S&P 500. He has an average annualized return of 18.7% and an average return per transaction of 18.66%. Eleven of his 18 transactions have made a profit.

Over a third – 36.09%- of Hikaru’s portfolio is in the technology sector. These have been among his top performers boosted primarily by the continued buzz around AI.

  • Alphabet Class C (GOOG) – He bought 40 shares on September 16, 2025. It represents 11.25% of his overall holdings. He is sitting on a 57.56% gain.
  • Amazon (AMZN) – He bought 40 shares on September 16, 2025. It represents 15.96% of his overall holdings. He is sitting on a 15.96% gain.
  • Tesla (TSLA) – He bought 7 shares on September 16, 2025. It represents 2.12% of his overall portfolio. He is sitting on a 2.51% gain.
  • Intel (INTC) – He bought 250 shares on September 26, 2025. It represents 22.13% of his overall portfolio. He is sitting on a 247.77% gain.

Not everything in Hikaru’s tech garden is rosy, however.

  • Robinhood (HOOD) – He bought 55 shares on September 16, 2025. It represents 3% of his overall holdings. He is sitting on a loss of 34.35%, hit by cryptocurrency volatility.
  • Shopify (SHOP) – He bought 53 shares on February 6, 2026. It represents 4.15% of his overall holdings. He is sitting on a loss of 21.54% over concerns over AI competition.
