Superintelligence is an advanced form of artificial intelligence (AI) that would surpass humans on all cognitive tasks. More than 850 people, including many technology leaders, have signed a statement calling for a pause in the development of superintelligence, claiming it could have dire consequences for the human race.
The list of signatories includes prominent AI pioneers such as computer scientists Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton, widely viewed as the “godfathers” of modern AI. Prominent AI researchers such as the University of California, Berkeley’s Stuart Russell also signed the statement.
‘Human Extinction’
Superintelligence has become a buzzword in the AI world as startups such as xAI and OpenAI race to release more advanced large language models. Meta Platforms (META) has named its AI division “Meta Superintelligence Labs.”
The signatories of the statement warn that AI superintelligence raises a number of concerns, such as “human economic obsolescence and disempowerment, losses of freedom, civil liberties, dignity, and control, to national security risks and even potential human extinction.”
The statement calls for a ban on developing superintelligence until there is strong public support for the technology and a scientific consensus that it can be built and controlled safely. Signatories to the statement also include several politicians and government officials, including former chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen and Steve Bannon, a prominent ally of U.S. President Donald Trump.
