Here’s What AMD’s CEO Thinks about Meta’s Massive Pay Packages

Lisa Su, the CEO of chipmaker AMD (AMD), is taking a different approach when it comes to hiring AI researchers by choosing not to match the massive $100 million pay packages that Meta (META) CEO Mark Zuckerberg offers to lure top talent. While she admits that competitive pay is important, Su believes that the real key to attracting great employees is making them feel valued and connected to AMD’s mission. As a result, she wants new hires to join for the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the company’s future, not just for a big paycheck.

This philosophy is similar to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s stance, as he also refuses to match such offers by arguing that money alone can’t buy loyalty or align workers with company goals. Indeed, both Su and Amodei view such outsized salaries to newcomers as unfair to existing employees, with Amodei warning that special deals can harm company culture.

In addition, while Zuckerberg has successfully recruited at least seven AI experts from other firms, including OpenAI, Amodei says that most of his employees reject Meta’s offers outright. In fact, with an 80% retention rate over the past two years, compared to Meta’s 64%, Amodei credits the company’s consistent culture and mission alignment as its key advantages. Therefore, both leaders agree that true innovation comes from committed teams, not from whoever pays the most.
