Alphabet’s (GOOGL) subsidiary, Google, has disclosed a major step toward making quantum computing practical. The tech giant announced a breakthrough in this space, the first-ever demonstration of a “verifiable quantum advantage.” The company said its Willow quantum chip ran a specialized algorithm, called Quantum Echoes, 13,000 times faster than one of the most powerful supercomputers. Following the news, GOOGL stock rose about 2.4% on Wednesday.

It is worth highlighting that the results are verifiable, which means other quantum systems can reproduce them, and scientists can confirm the outcomes through experiments. “The key thing about verifiability is it’s a huge step in the path toward a real-world application,” said Tom O’Brien, a lead researcher at Google Quantum AI.
Also, the company believes this breakthrough could lead to real-world uses in areas such as medicine, drug discovery, and materials science within the next five years.
What’s Next for Google?
With this milestone, Google joins a small group of tech giants, including Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT), pushing quantum computing closer to commercial reality. While the technology is still in its early stages, the Willow chip’s success suggests that useful quantum applications could arrive soon.
Google’s quantum roadmap now focuses on building a long-lasting logical qubit, called Milestone 3. This would allow quantum computers to fix their own errors and run even more powerful programs. If successful, it could lead to major advances in medicine, clean energy, and scientific research powered by AI.
