According to a new report from Adweek, YouTube has surpassed Reddit (RDDT) as the primary social media source for AI large language models (LLMs). The report says that the transition marks a notable shift in how machines are receiving and digesting information.
Until now, Reddit had been the dominant social media source for AI models due to its text-heavy format. But Adweek says that YouTube’s video content has now overtaken Reddit as the most frequently cited social media platform among AI-generated responses.
Video Replaces Text
As AI large language models become more powerful and sophisticated, they are able to increasingly process and consume video content as well as text. Previously, AI models had difficulty parsing the meaning of videos and other broadcast media.
Adweek says that transcripts, explainers, and other information associated with videos posted to YouTube have allowed the video platform to become a leading source for AI models. The report notes that YouTube appeared as a cited source in 16% of AI-generated answers over the last six months, compared with 10% for Reddit.
