Tech giant Google (GOOGL) is making it easier for Mac users to access its AI tools by launching a standalone Gemini app for macOS. As more people start using AI tools, this move brings Gemini directly onto Apple (AAPL) computers instead of requiring a browser or phone. Once installed, users can open it quickly with an Option-Space shortcut.

Unsurprisingly, the app includes all of Gemini’s main features, such as writing emails, creating reports, and planning trips. However, it also adds a new ability to understand what is on a user’s screen, including files and apps that are open. As a result, it can give more helpful and relevant answers based on what the user is doing. In addition, users can create images and videos directly from the app using Google’s Nano Banana and Veo tools.
Importantly, Google says that this is only the first version and that more updates are coming. For now, the Gemini app works on macOS Sequoia (version 15) and newer. The goal is to turn Gemini into a more personal and proactive desktop assistant over time. However, it is worth noting that competition is increasing, as companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are already offering Mac apps for ChatGPT and Claude.
