Google DeepMind Releases New AI Model to Bring Robots Closer to Real Autonomy

Google DeepMind, part of tech giant Alphabet (GOOGL), has released a new version of its robotics AI model and is now opening it up to developers. The updated system, called Gemini Robotics-ER 1.6, builds on earlier versions and is designed to help machines better understand the world around them. Indeed, the biggest upgrade is how the model understands space, movement, and objects.

Google says the model can now analyze environments with much higher accuracy by combining spatial reasoning with multiple viewpoints. In addition, the model also improves how robots “see” and measure things. It uses a method that combines visual understanding with code, allowing it to zoom into images, analyze details, and estimate distances or sizes more precisely. As a result, robots can better detect objects and make decisions during tasks.

For example, if something goes wrong, the system can decide whether to try again or move on to the next step. Because of this, the model moves closer to allowing robots to operate more independently without constant human input. However, Google is still working to improve the system and is asking developers and researchers to share examples where it does not perform well.
