Tech giant Google (GOOGL) is adding more Gemini-powered features to Gmail, such as AI-generated summaries that condense long email threads into short, easy-to-read overviews. Notably, Google said that the updates will roll out gradually, and some features will be turned on by default, which means that users who do not want to use them will need to opt out. In addition, Google is adding its AI Overviews technology, which already appears at the top of search results, into Gmail.

The company is also expanding on Gemini features introduced last year, which let users search emails, draft messages from prompts, improve grammar, and generate custom responses. One of the new additions is “Suggested Replies,” an upgraded version of Smart Replies that uses the context of past emails to create more relevant one-click responses. Google is also improving its proofreading tools to help make emails clearer and more concise.
These updates are part of Google’s strategy to integrate Gemini across its consumer products and take advantage of Gmail’s massive user base, which now exceeds 3 billion users. This scale gives Google a strong edge as it competes with generative AI rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic. The push into AI is also reflected in market performance, with Google recently overtaking Apple (AAPL) in market value for the first time since 2019.
