The ongoing investigation raises broader concerns about how artificial intelligence (AI) tools from other private companies, such as Anthropic, Perplexity, and DeepSeek, are being used.

Uthmeier launched the investigation after a suspect involved in the school shooting at Florida State University (FSU) was found to have possibly used ChatGPT. The suspect allegedly asked the AI model questions shortly before the tragic event about how people would react to it at the busiest times at the school’s student union.
Uthmeier also raised concerns about how AI tools continue to affect children and public safety. Based on his investigation, ChatGPT has been used in multiple suicidal situations among the younger generation.
The Florida AG further revealed that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) could use OpenAI’s technology against the U.S. This could range from mass surveillance and tracking of Americans to generating fake government documents or propaganda on social media and impersonating officials.
As a result, authorities are now paying attention to how AI systems are built and the safeguards within them. Uthmeier has also urged the Florida legislature to look into the matter to protect children from the negative impacts of AI.
OpenAI Responds and Promises Cooperation
In response to the ongoing investigation, OpenAI is working on making its AI systems safer and more responsible, especially for the younger generation. The private company explained that millions of people use ChatGPT to solve problems and learn, highlighting its positive uses.
