Dow Jones Steady as Government Shutdown Fears Ease

The Dow Jones (DJIA) is little changed on Friday after the Senate cleared a hurdle to avoid another government shutdown on January 30. The previous government shutdown in late 2025 lasted a record 43 days.

On Thursday evening, the Senate voted 82-15 to pass a three-bill spending package worth $174 billion. The package provides funding for the departments of Justice, Interior, Commerce, Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), water programs, and more.

Funding Talks Continue as Shutdown Deadline Looms

However, six government funding bills are still on the table if Congress wants to avoid another shutdown. For example, over 75% of discretionary program funding still needs to be approved. Next week, the Senate will vote on another package funding the Treasury and State departments.

“We’ve got to continue to complete the job and make progress on the remainder of the appropriations bills,” said Senate Appropriations Chair Susan Collins.
