The Dow Jones (DJIA) is set to open the trading week higher after President Trump said that the U.S. is in discussions with Iranian officials to end the war.

“The United States of America is in serious discussions with A NEW, AND MORE REASONABLE, REGIME to end our Military Operations in Iran,” he said in a Truth Social post on Monday.

However, Trump also followed his statement with a threat, saying that if a deal isn’t reached and if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, the U.S. will respond by “completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island.”

Over the weekend, Trump told the Financial Times that his preference is to “take the oil in Iran,” drawing a comparison to U.S. actions in Venezuela. The U.S. now has over 50,000 troops in the Middle East, around 10,000 higher than normal levels, as Trump weighs his options.
