Discord Mandates Age Verification Globally
Starting in March 2026, Discord will mandate age verification for global users seeking to access sensitive content or modify restricted safety settings. According to the official announcement, all new and existing accounts will transition to a “teen-appropriate experience” by default. Under these rules, only verified adults can unblur sensitive media, enter age-gated servers, or speak on “Stage” channels. Direct messages from unknown users will be automatically redirected to a separate request inbox, a restriction that remains in place unless a user completes the verification process.
To facilitate the rollout, Discord is introducing a “privacy-forward” age verification system that features facial age estimation and government ID submission through third-party partners. The private company confirmed that facial scans are processed on the device to protect privacy, and that submitted documents are typically deleted immediately after confirmation. It is also deploying a background “age inference model” to categorize accounts without requiring manual input from every user.
Discord Builds on Earlier Safety Pilots
The global rollout follows successful localized pilots launched by Discord on Dec. 9, 2025, in the U.K. and Australia. These initial phases were designed to align with strict regional regulations, such as the U.K. Online Safety Act, which mandates robust age-gating for services hosting adult content. Discord said the global expansion is intended to standardize its safety architecture across more than 200 million monthly active users.
The rollout also follows prior challenges tied to age-related systems. In October 2025, Discord disclosed a data exposure involving a third-party vendor used for age appeals, affecting approximately 70,000 users and including images of government-issued identification. As it expands mandatory age verification, Discord said its privacy-forward system will continue to evolve, with additional verification options planned over time to reduce friction while maintaining safety standards.
