D-Wave Quantum Inc. (QBTS) and global chemical giant BASF (BASFY) have completed a major proof-of-concept project that shows how quantum computing can make manufacturing faster and more efficient. By using hybrid-quantum computing, the companies cut production scheduling time at a BASF liquid-filling facility from 10 hours to just five seconds. Following the news, QBTS stock was up 4% on Wednesday.

This breakthrough reflects how quantum technology can solve complex operational challenges that traditional systems struggle with.
Quantum Tech Cuts BASF Production Delays
It must be noted that the BASF facility fills thousands of bottles across multiple products, which requires careful coordination from tank unloading to final shipment. Even small delays can disrupt schedules and increase costs.
To tackle this, D-Wave’s system was built to reduce setup time between product switches, shorten tank unloading, and minimize delivery delays.
In real-world testing, the system outperformed traditional methods, reducing product lateness by 14%, setup time by 9%, and unloading time by up to 18%.
D-Wave CEO Dr. Alan Baratz said, “This project showcases how hybrid-quantum computing can help address manufacturing and supply-chain operational bottlenecks and begin delivering measurable value where classical computing falls short.”
Overall, these results set a new benchmark for manufacturing efficiency and point to the real-world potential of quantum computing in supply chain optimization.
QBTS to Report Q3 Earnings Tomorrow
Importantly, the news comes ahead of D-Wave’s Q3 earnings, expected tomorrow, November 6. Wall Street is expecting QBTS to report a loss of $0.066 per share, compared with a loss per share of $0.072 in the same period last year. Meanwhile, analysts project revenues of $3.03 million, up from $1.87 million in the year-ago quarter.
Is QBTS a Good Stock to Buy?
Turning to Wall Street, D-Wave Quantum stock has a Strong Buy consensus rating based on 10 Buys assigned in the last three months. At $27.00, the average QBTS stock price target implies a 12.48% downside risk.
