Crypto Hackers Cash In on Ethereum Rally by Selling $72 Million in Stolen Funds

Story Highlights

Three major crypto hackers have used Ethereum’s surge to $4,780 to cash out $72 million in stolen funds.

Crypto Hackers Cash In on Ethereum Rally by Selling $72 Million in Stolen Funds

The hacker behind the Radiant Capital exploit, believed by the protocol to be linked to North Korea, originally stole $53 million from the DeFi platform in October 2024. They converted most of the loot into 21,957 ETH at around $2,414 each.

This week, the attacker sold 9,631 ETH for $44 million in stablecoins. They still control 12,326 ETH along with the stablecoin proceeds, a combined haul worth about $101 million. That represents a $48.3 million increase over the value of the original stolen funds.

Infini Attacker Adds $25 Million to Theft

The Infini exploit in February 2025 saw a hacker steal $49.5 million in USDC and quickly convert it into 17,696 ETH at roughly $2,798 each. They laundered 5,000 ETH through Tornado Cash, then sold 3,540 ETH for $13 million in stablecoins at an average price of $3,762.

Thanks to Ethereum’s rally, the value of their remaining ETH has grown enough to add $25.15 million in profit to the initial theft.

Unidentified Hacker Turns Quick Trade Into Millions

A third exploiter, who targeted THORChain (RUNE-USD) and Chainflip in March 2025, stole 17,412 ETH and sold it for $33.9 million DAI at $1,947 per coin. In June, they re-entered the market, buying 4,957 ETH at $2,495.

On Friday morning, they sold those ETH for $22.13 million in stablecoins at $4,464, netting a profit of $9.76 million from the trade.

Ethereum Rally Magnifies Impact of Crypto Theft

These cases show how price surges can supercharge the profits of crypto hackers long after the initial theft. While each of the three attackers had already stolen large sums, Ethereum’s climb to $4,780 turned their holdings into far larger windfalls.

The trend comes during one of the worst stretches on record for crypto security. Investors lost $3.1 billion to hacks in the first half of 2025 alone, after $1.49 billion was stolen in all of 2024.

At the time of writing, Ethereum is sitting at $4,475.78.
